Al Qalam Academy (AQA), based in Barking, runs a weekend maktab for children aged 7 and above from the Hedgecock Community Centre (HCC), Upney, Barking.

During Ramadan, these children were tasked with taking a small box home and collecting funds for the charity; Lonely Orphans.

“The act of charity is highly regarded in Islam, and Muslims are known for their generosity and charitable giving. Hence, we wanted to instil this attribute in our students when they’re young” Said Ruhul Amin, Manager of AQA.

Upon their return after the Ramadan recess, collectively an amazing amount of £512.35 was raised. Every child was given a goody bag for participating in the fundraising, as well as gold, silver and bronze certificates and medals awarded to those who raised the most amount of money for charity.

“It goes without saying that all are equal in this wonderful event of helping those in need,” Added Imran Rahman of Lonely Orphans.

“We saved our pocket money and gave it to a good cause,” Said Musa Ali, an 11-year-old student of AQA. “Ramadan is a month of giving and all good deeds are said to multiply during this holy month,” Added Musa.

UK Muslim donors give on average more than £130 million ($160 million) to charity during Ramadan. These are only estimates, however, as some Muslims choose to send their zakat (obligatory charity) money abroad or give it to poor family members without disclosing it to others.
