Dads and Lads conquer Cadair Idris for charity
On Saturday 24th May, Bangladesh Regeneration Trust UK (BRT) led a courageous group of 17 individuals, comprising 8 father-and-son teams and their trek leader to the summit of Cadair Idris, one of the most iconic peaks in Snowdonia, Wales.
The purpose of this remarkable event was threefold: to foster meaningful father-son bonding, promote a much-needed digital detox, and raise vital funds for the flood-affected communities of Noakhali, Bangladesh. In a world where screens often get in the way of connection, this was a weekend dedicated to real conversations, shared challenges, and purposeful action.
For many of the young participants, this was their first time undertaking a trek of such scale. Excitement and nerves ran high, some were eager to take on the mountain, while others quietly worried about getting lost or making it to the top. Regardless, each one arrived with determination.
The group travelled from East London and stayed at a bunkhouse near the scenic town of Dolgellau, at the foot of the mountain. While the days leading up to the hike saw clear skies and warm sun, Saturday brought a harsh turn in weather with forecasts predicting heavy rain and strong winds. The team made the decision to cut short a relaxed breakfast, opting instead for energy bars, a light meal, and packed lunches. Safety and preparation were paramount. Everyone ensured they had sufficient water, food, and gear before setting off.
The chosen route was the Pony Path a challenging ascent that quickly proved to be the most demanding trek many had ever experienced. From near-zero visibility to driving hailstorms and punishing winds, the hike tested every participant’s resilience, strength, and teamwork. Yet, undeterred by the conditions, the group pushed through. Reaching the summit, they paused briefly to capture a few windswept photos before sheltering in a small hut to regroup and begin the descent.
Navigational challenges slowed the team down on the way back, with a few wrong turns quickly corrected. But just over six hours later, the entire group safely returned to the minibus, soaked, exhausted, but triumphant.
The climb was more than a physical test. It was a charitable mission, and together, the team raised over £6,000, with donations still coming in. A phenomenal achievement by all involved.
The evening concluded with a heartwarming feedback and awards ceremony at a local Bangladeshi restaurant. After enjoying a delicious meal, medals were awarded to all participants, and certificates of appreciation were presented to each team. Prizes were also given to the top three fundraising teams — a well-deserved recognition for their efforts.
