While many of us have been pushing through the physical demands of fasting during Ramadan, Mohammed Sahed Hussain of Upney, Barking has been going above and beyond; quietly transforming his local environment for the better.

Over the past month, Mohammed has dedicated an incredible 40 hours to litter-picking across the Leftley Estate, collecting his 110th bag of waste. This is a remarkable achievement at any time, but even more so during Ramadan, when he has been fasting from dawn to dusk without food or drink.

Driven by a strong sense of responsibility, Mohammed explains:

“I do this because it’s my moral duty. I live in the area, and when I see litter being dumped, I feel compelled to step in; supporting the local authority and helping to keep our neighbourhood clean and safe.”

During his efforts, Mohammed has encountered a range of concerning items; from nitrous oxide canisters to drug-related paraphernalia; highlighting the importance of community vigilance and action.

“I’d encourage everyone to get involved. Even small actions can make a big difference in keeping our environment clean and safe.” He continues.

Recognising that many residents are unsure how to report issues such as littering and fly-tipping, Mohammed has taken things a step further by creating a community WhatsApp group; “Longbridge Litter Inbox.” This platform allows residents to quickly report neglected areas and illegal dumping, ensuring concerns are raised and addressed more effectively.

Mohammed is also actively collaborating with local initiatives, including the Little Litter League, and inspiring the next generation by even engaging with pupils from Manor Junior School.

His efforts are a powerful reminder that real change starts at the grassroots level. If you’re inspired to make a difference; whether through litter-picking, recycling, or simply taking pride in your local area; consider joining Mohammed and supporting this growing community movement.
