Community Litter Pick for Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations in the Park

Published: 2 June 2022, 9:04 PM

On the morning of 2nd June 2022, whilst many were preparing for a long weekend of celebrations marking the 70th year of our Queen’s reign, Little Litter League was out in Barking Park, Barking & Dagenham, along with Barking and Dagenham Councillors; Cllr Kashif Haroon, Lead Member for Public Realm & Climate, Cllr Faruk Choudhury now the Civic Mayor of Barking and Dagenham, and community champions; Emdad Rahman MBE and Luthfur Miah.

They all participated in litter picking around the vicinity of the park entrance and have witnessed the menace of our community. Litter dumping has a huge impact on the local landscape, our environment and our lives. It takes years for plastic packaging and metal to degrade and causes harm to wildlife and the ecosystem. Food people drop; whether half eaten burgers, chicken and chips or fizzy drinks can attract rodents, insects and birds causing health risks. Hence, please do your bit to keep your environment clean and safe.

“My message is loud and clear!” Said Cllr Haroon. “This is your home, keep it clean as you’d do to your home. The Council is doing it’s part, but it is a collective responsibility for us all” Added Cllr Haroon.

The Little Litter League is an initiative of Emdad and they’ve been organising community litter picks across the country. “Little picking is therapeutic, a humility exercise for the soul, and a happy feeling for the mind!” laughed Emdad. “On an average day, you could easily collect 5-6 bag loads within half an hour and then you just go about your normal routine.” added Emdad.

Luthfur, a local resident and this was his first litter pick. “I really enjoyed it. I am shocked by the variety of items dumped on the floor. from nappies to tissues, the list is endless.” He Said.

Within half an hour, 5 bags were collected and placed near the bins. a photo was sent to the Council’s refuge collection team and will be picked up on their next round. Follow social media hashtag #LittleLitterLeague for their next litter picking session.
