Ishrat Jahan Chowdhury, wife of late bank official Abdul Morshed Chowdhury of Chattogram, alleged that her husband committed suicide at the behest of a gang led by Jatiya Sangsad whip Shamsul Hoque Chowdhury’s son Nazmul Haque Chowdhury Sharun.
Sharun along with cohorts unleashed unbearable psychological pressure and harassment resulting in the suicide.
She made the claim at a press conference at Sagar-Runi auditorium of Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) in the capital Saturday morning.
The late banker’s mother Nur Nahar and daughter Mubasshira Jahan Chowdhury were also present at the press conference.
They demanded arrest of and punishment to Sharun and others responsible for the suicide.

At one stage of the torture, banker Abdul Morshed Chowdhury along with family members wanted to shift to Japan but the gang sensed the move and blocked their overseas trip.
“Abdul Morshed Chowdhury managed to secure Japanese tourist visa ready for us in September 2018. We were indecisive and lingering. We preferred to stay at home and were monitoring the situation. The opposite came to know about it. Just two days prior to the flight, they took us to MM Palace (house of Abu Mohammad Mohsin). Morshed was inside the house while I was in the car. Later, they called me inside. The group said they will send me to Japan. ,” she said.
She claimed to have found her husband at the gun point in that room.
Narrating horrible story of the day, she said the gang asked banker Abdul Morshed Chowdhury to give the key of vault to resolve the crisis.
“If the key of vault is given, we will allow you to go to Japan,” the gang was quoted as saying.
Ishrat Jahan alleged the gang took her mobile phone by resorting to scuffle and covering her mouth with a piece of cloth.
Although the above incident took place in 2018, the persecution continued till suicide of the banker, she said.
On 7 April, police recovered the hanging body of Abdul Morshed Chowdhury, manager of Bank Alfalah Agrabad branch, from a flat in Nahar Bhaban in the Hill view residential area in the port city.
The following day, Ishrat filed a case against four named people bringing allegations of inciting her husband to take his own life. Banker Morshed Chowdhury committed suicide on April 7.
The accused in the case are former Director of Chattogram Chamber of Commerce and Industry Jabed Iqbal Chowdhury and his brother Parvez Iqbal Chowdhury, their close relative Naeem Uddin Shakib and central Jubo League leader Shahidul Haque Chowdhury Russell. They were made specific accused in this case.
According to the case statement, Morshed was forced to commit suicide due to pressure, torture inflicted on him and mental sufferings for alleged unfair demand to return the borrowed money.
Young banker and businessman Abdul Morshed Chowdhury was victim of secret business of illegal money investment of whip’s son Nazmul Haque Chowdhury Sharun.
Sharun lends his ill-gotten money to businessmen through others and uses his political clout to realise huge amounts in capital and interests.
He also inflicts torture on businessmen if they fail to pay back money as per his demand.
The bank official failed to buy relief from Sharun even after paying around Tk 38 crore against a loan of Tk 25 crore. He had to choose the path of suicide failing to bear the political and administrative pressure.
