As Bangladesh commemorates its Independence Day, the nation is embroiled in a disheartening spectacle of mud-slinging, back-biting, and credit-mongering among those who should be united in honouring the sacrifices made for freedom. Instead of fostering camaraderie and decency, the country is subjected to a cacophony of champion claimants stealing each other’s glory, each vying for the title of the sole saviour of the nation.

The history books narrate a collective struggle where countless individuals from all walks of life poured their blood, sweat, and tears into the fight for liberation. Yet, today, the populace is bombarded with cantankerous claims, with each faction vehemently asserting its exclusive role in securing independence.

Was it the political maneuverings of one party or the armed resistance of another that ultimately led to emancipation? History reveals that the truth is far more complex and nuanced than any single narrative would have us believe. Yet, instead of acknowledging this complexity, the nation faces a never-ending spectacle of partisan bickering.

What message does this send to the present generation? Are they to believe that their predecessors were so consumed by their own egos that they couldn’t see the bigger picture? Were they more concerned with stealing each other’s thunder than securing a better future for generations to come?

As Bangladesh reflects on its journey to freedom, it is imperative to remember the countless unsung heroes who gave their all for the cause. Their sacrifices must be honoured by rising above the petty squabbles of the past and working together to build a brighter future for the nation. Ultimately, it is not the glory-hungry politicians or self-proclaimed champions who deserve admiration but the ordinary people who stood united in the face of adversity.

This Independence Day serves as a poignant reminder of the unity and resilience that propelled Bangladesh towards freedom. It is time to acknowledge the collective efforts of all those who contributed, regardless of political affiliation or personal ambition.
