Bangladeshi community protests to save Manchester-Sylhet flight route
Manchester, January 20, 2025 – The Bangladeshi community in Manchester staged a powerful protest against the proposed suspension of Biman Bangladesh Airlines’ Manchester-Sylhet flight. This vital route, which serves as a key link between the Bangladeshi diaspora in the UK and their homeland, has become a source of anxiety following rumours of its potential cancellation.
The protest, organised by News 71 Multimedia in collaboration with local community leaders and groups, highlighted the deep significance of this flight for Non-Resident Bangladeshis (NRBs).
Representatives from the Bangladesh Probashi Kollayan Parishad (BPKP) travelled from London to join the rally, underscoring the widespread concern over the issue.
Community leaders described the Manchester-Sylhet route as more than just a means of transportation, emphasising its role in maintaining vital social, cultural, and economic connections. Protestors called on authorities to prioritise the needs of the NRB community and stop “neglecting” their concerns by considering the suspension of such a critical service.
Prominent figures present at the protest included:
• Ashikur Rahman, Founder President, BPKP
• Moin Uddin Ansar, Vice Secretary, BPKP
• Parvez Qureshi, Vice President, BPKP
• Dr. Mashukur Rahman, Assistant Secretary, BPKP
• Mushtaq Babul, Press and Publication Secretary, BPKP
• Anisur Rahman, Religious Secretary, BPKP
• Joynal Khan, Assistant Cultural Secretary, BPKP
Each speaker underscored the Manchester-Sylhet flight’s importance, urging stakeholders to reconsider plans that would sever a critical link between families and communities.
The event ended with a unified demand for the Bangladeshi government and Biman Bangladesh Airlines to act swiftly in addressing the community’s concerns, ensuring the preservation of this essential connection for NRBs.
